The first few days of the new year usually feels like a fresh start...until you realize your holiday decorations and newly opened gifts are still taking over your home. If only we had a reset button for January 1st that did all of our cleaning and organizing for us! If this sounds like you, (don’t worry, we won’t tell) we have great news for you. There is a wonderful opportunity to go through your Christmas/Holiday décor and find items to DONATE or RECYCLE. Exciting, right?! It’s a win-win situation because it allows you carefully organize your things while clearing out some clutter or that extra stocking you never use. Please consider donating some of these gently used items to a local charity (see our previous blog here that talks all about local Woodlands area charities). Before we are ready to donate and recycle, we need to take the time to actually organize our things. We’ve put together 8 very helpful tips that you can follow to achieve a clean and organized home for 2019. If you are interested in hiring a professional organizer, scroll down to the end to find a list of local providers.
Fix What Bugs You the Most First.
Look around your home and make a list of the areas that stand out to you and make a point to start the process there. Not only will this make you feel more accomplished, it will also motivate you to keep going!
Take Small Bites of the Task When Clearing Clutter.
There are much better methods than to tackle way too much at once. Choose a time when you have the most energy and give yourself a time limit.
Share Your Decluttering Goal with Others.
A wonderful way to stay motivated is to have someone hold you accountable. Ask a family member or friend to check up on you every so often.
Trouble Seeing the Clutter? Take a Picture.
After living in our homes for so long, we start to get used to seeing our clutter. If you take pictures of your space, it makes it so much easier to see all of the extra stuff you don't need.
Create a Positive Reward for Yourself.
It's a great way to stay motivated! Just make sure your reward doesn't add more clutter...
Grab a Timer and Just Start!
The first few minutes are the hardest, but once you get started you may be surprised at what you accomplish. Try doing just 15 minutes a day!
Deal with Clutter as it Comes through the Door.
From junk mail to trash from the car, it will make a big difference in reducing the total amount of clutter in your house if you simply take care of it right when it is set on the counter.
Have a Donate Box Ready at All Times.
Stop thinking and start acting! Having a donate box nearby will encourage you and your family to make decisions on items that are no longer wanted or needed.
